School reports come once or twice a year and rarely say much about reading specifically. Knowing where your child actually is turns out to matter whether they are behind, ahead, or exactly where you would expect. A child who reads easily can still be coasting on books that no longer stretch them. A child doing fine at eight can stall at eleven when texts get denser. And a child finding it hard benefits most from being noticed early. Reading develops for a decade. Knowing where your child is, and doing a few of the right things, is how you stay part of it. ## This is what you receive. Read it. While they read, the webcam records how their eyes move across the text and the microphone records them reading aloud. There is no timer on screen, no score shown, and nothing that tells your child they are being tested. The eyes give away a great deal. A confident reader stops briefly and jumps a long way; a reader working harder stops more often and goes back over words. Trained on over a million recordings, the analysis turns that pattern into a reading level. It produces the information. You decide what to do with it, and the guide is there to help you. **Why you can trust it.** Lexplore came out of research at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, built on a study that followed hundreds of readers from primary school into adulthood, beginning in 1989. The AI behind it was trained on that data and refined by every assessment since. Over a million assessments have been carried out since, and your child's profile is compared against real, current reading data, not a fixed benchmark from years ago. The method has been independently replicated by other research groups. Two of them, a term apart, show which direction they are going, and that is the part worth knowing. Your child’s starting point is kept, so the second profile shows the change rather than another number on its own. Most families come back two or three times a year, around school terms. Two real anonymised results ## Questions Does my child need to know this is an assessment? No. Nothing on screen calls it a test, there is no timer and no score. From your child’s point of view they read a short story and answer a few questions about it. If they ask why, “I want to see how your reading is going, and then we’ll read more together” is enough. What ages is it for?From around six to fifteen — the years when children are actively learning to read and reading to learn. The passage and questions are matched to your child's age, so the profile reflects what's typical for where they are, not a single fixed benchmark.Will this tell me if my child has dyslexia? No. Lexplore does not diagnose anything, including dyslexia. What it does is show where your child’s reading sits and how hard they are working to get there, which can surface a difficulty earlier than it would otherwise appear. If that is what the profile shows, the guide says so calmly, tells you what to try at home, and tells you when it is worth raising with your child’s teacher or a specialist.
